Coffee County capital outlay committee elects officers; approves event use and UT Extension requests, denies Democratic Party request

On event permits, the committee approved a request for the Cars and Coffee event to use the county parking lot on Sept. 6 and for the first Saturday of each month from April through October, with event hours noted as 8 a.m. to noon on the county's side of the listing. Commissioner Watkins made the motion to approve and Commissioner Brown seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.
A request from the local Democratic Party scheduled for Sept. 13 was not approved after no representative appeared and no written request or details were provided. The chair said he would recommend denial in the absence of a party representative and supporting paperwork; several members agreed and the item was marked not approved.
Two UT Extension requests were approved after on-site staff described them. Amy, a UT Extension representative, explained that the Coffee County High School Class of 1958 seeks permission to place a memorial bench outside the extension office entrance in honor of Dr. James Veil, an extension specialist who worked with the Tennessee cattle industry. Amy said no county funds were requested. The committee approved the bench installation and directed Amy to coordinate final color and installation details with county staff.
Amy also sought permission to tint the extension office's internal windows to replace blinds; she said the extension office would fund the work. Commissioner Brown moved to approve the tinting and Commissioner Watkins seconded; the motion passed.
The committee set its next meeting for Oct. 2 at 4:00 p.m. and adjourned.
