Parents ask council for crosswalk by Maria Montessori Academy; staff to study options

Kaylin (Caitlin) Stanley and other nearby residents petitioned the North Ogden City Council on Sept. 9 for a marked crosswalk on 2550 North to improve safe walking access from the Cove townhome complex to Maria Montessori Academy and nearby destinations.

Stanley told the council she and at least one other family walk small children to the Montessori school and that the nearest existing crosswalk (near Majestic Elementary) requires backtracking. She said the location she proposed is used by families with very young children and that motorists speed once they clear the Majestic Elementary school zone. She said residents frequently walk to the North Shore Aquatic Center and would benefit from a closer, marked crossing.

Council members and staff responded that the request touches three jurisdictions in close proximity; Chief Inan and Public Works Director Dave Espinosa were present and were asked to assess the site. The council asked city staff and the police chief to count pedestrian crossings, evaluate school‑zone boundaries and consider whether an extended school speed zone, a marked crosswalk, or other engineering measures would be appropriate. Stanley said she would gather a petition and additional usage numbers to help staff assess demand.

Council member Barker noted that part of the proposed location is in another city’s jurisdiction and recommended coordination with Pleasant View and Harrisville where appropriate. The council did not vote on the request; it directed staff to investigate and return with recommendations and any interlocal coordination required.
