Council discusses surge in motorized scooters; emphasis on education and parent outreach over immediate ordinance

Lennox City Council members and police discussed a sharp rise in privately owned motorized-scooter use and sought a measured local response focused first on education and parent outreach rather than immediate ordinance adoption.

Alderman Bendriel and Councilmember Welch asked council to consider policy options after several residents reported scooters being ridden on streets and blowing through stop signs. Chief Erickson described a noticeable increase in scooter use "this year" and told the council many users are children: "Somebody had a good sale on them. Everybody's got one," he said. Erickson noted existing traffic law requires bicyclists on roadways to follow the same rules as vehicles, but enforcement is complicated by rider age and parent supervision.

Council members discussed several options that staff will explore: an education campaign with the school (bike/scooter rodeo or safety town), helmet giveaways or partnerships with businesses, a permitting or sticker program tied to a brief safety course, and tailored language for any ordinance modeled after other cities—or enforceability. The city attorney and police department will be consulted before any regulatory change is drafted.

No ordinance was introduced. The council directed staff to prioritize outreach and education in advance of exploring enforceable standards.
