Transit to remove school trip Route 6 from schedule effective Sept. 2; committee receives communication

At the Aug. 11, 2025 meeting of the Kenosha License and Permit Committee, transit staff reported that school trip Route 6 will be removed from the system schedule effective Sept. 2, 2025, because Kenosha Unified School District had reassigned its students to other school trippers.

A transit staff member explained that Route 6 had been converted to a school-day-only tripper after 2010 and currently served Bradford High School and Indian Trail High School in the Mahone area. Staff said Kenosha Unified’s transportation supervisor, Jeff Marks, had confirmed that the district could assign affected students to other existing tripper routes, and therefore the route will be eliminated for the 2025–26 school year.

When commissioners asked whether public notice was required, staff said no public hearing is required for this minor schedule adjustment and that the new schedule will be published in the Kenosha News and via the transit mobile app and social media on July 27 (publication date provided in staff notes). Commissioners also asked about driver impacts; staff said the change reduces one part-time school-route assignment and does not affect the system’s full-time driver staffing. Staff told commissioners the change carries no direct financial impact because Kenosha Unified funds school trippers as part of existing arrangements.

Commissioner Andrew Schmidt raised that a newly elected school board member had posted on social media they were unaware of the change; staff replied the transit office coordinates directly with Kenosha Unified’s transportation supervisor and that communication up the school district’s chain of command is outside transit’s control. The committee then voted to receive and file the communication.

Motion: receive and file the communication regarding elimination of school trip Route 6. Motion made, seconded and approved by voice vote; chair recorded the aye vote and the motion passed.
