Rensselaer County Legislature urges NYSDOT to implement Hoosick Corridor traffic measures; pause-on-development amendment fails

The Rensselaer County Legislature on July 8, 2025, approved a resolution urging the New York State Department of Transportation to implement traffic mitigation measures identified in the 2024 Hoosick Corridor Road study after multiple Brunswick residents testified about safety and quality‑of‑life impacts along Hoosick Road (Route 7). An on‑the‑floor amendment to the resolution that would have asked the Town of Brunswick to temporarily halt new commercial construction along Hoosick Road failed on a 6‑12 motion; the underlying resolution then passed on a roll‑call vote, 18‑0.

Residents who live along Hoosick Road told legislators the corridor’s congestion and driver behavior have made everyday activities hazardous. One resident, reading a statement on behalf of his wife, urged a pause on new construction: “Brunswick badly needs a moratorium on new construction and development,” he said, adding that the pause would allow officials time “to improve our safety and quality of life and implement some of those changes before we keep adding to our existing problem.”
