Board approves consent items including district historian; community groups report summer outreach

The board approved its consent and supplemental agendas on Aug. 13, including a newly created district historian position that the district will advertise to area universities and community applicants for a two-year honorarium appointment.
"This is the creation of the district historian, which, assuming passage tonight, we'll be advertising and working with area universities and community partners to request folks from the community to submit their application to be considered for the two-year honorarium," a board member said during discussion of consent items. The motion to approve new business (consent agenda) was moved by Mister Harkins and seconded by Miss Samatangelo; roll call votes were all yes.
Board member Miss Graff reported on a Hooked on Books for Kids summer partnership that reached all 10 elementary schools and distributed nearly 500 take-home books while donating an additional 900 creative-writing books for district use; the program used more than $1,100 to purchase new nature-themed books and involved volunteers from board members, Erie County Conservation District staff, Penn State Extension master gardeners and community partners.
Graff and partners also summarized United Way community school summer highlights, including the district's first United Way Community School Conference, community-school involvement in National Night Out events, two-day professional development for community-school directors, and a collaborative safer walking route rollout for Lincoln Elementary. Graff noted a personal donation toward signs for the walking route.
Public commenter Angela McNair thanked the district and stadium staff for permitting a back-to-school "summer jam" at the local stadium and said volunteers distributed about 400 backpacks at last year's event. "We serve — and we hope to connect with the district even more next year," McNair said.
The board also approved bills and payrolls and award-on-bids items without substantive discussion; each motion received unanimous roll call approval. A motion to adjourn was then approved.
