Aberdeen School Board approves 2025-26 district goals after admin retreat briefing

The Aberdeen School Board (Aberdeen School District 06-1) voted to approve its 2025-26 district goals after a presentation by Superintendent Dr. Guffin at the board meeting. The board approved the goals by voice vote; members signified approval with "aye."
Dr. Guffin told the board the goals reflect work discussed at an administrative retreat held two weeks earlier and said the district will continue to expand literacy efforts and begin focused work on middle- and high-school math standards. "Under student achievement ... Mrs. Call has done an outstanding job leading the work with our literacy committee and the training of the science of reading, and that work will continue again this year," Guffin said. He added the district will expand science-of-reading training into grades 6 through 12 and roll out a reading intervention program called SOAR.
The superintendent also flagged safety and wellness priorities. He said the district held a comprehensive emergency-preparedness tabletop exercise on July 29 with the Aberdeen Police Department, the Aberdeen County Sheriff's Office, Brown County Emergency Management and Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, and that the exercise produced enhancements to the district safety plan. Officer Olsen provided an updated ALICE training video, and the district will continue mental-health first-aid training for new staff.
Guffin noted the communications plan will be presented in more detail at the next board meeting by Communications Director Alyssa Dickey; the district has begun distributing a monthly newsletter to families and plans theme-based outreach each month. The board heard that ATEC will have new local-business leadership and continued focus on internships.
The goals motion was placed on the floor and seconded; the board approved the goals by voice vote. The presentation preceded a review of summer facilities work and several policy second readings later on the agenda.
The board did not attach a dollar figure or new binding budget action to the goals during the vote; the document approved by the board describes priority work areas (student achievement, health and wellness, school-community relations, career/technical education, and safety) rather than specific budget allocations. The board indicated staff will report back as projects and training schedules are finalized.
