Superintendent: frozen federal title funds released; 58 new teachers join district, convocation planned

Superintendent CJ Anderson told the Elko County School District Board of Trustees that federal title funds that had been frozen were released after the district’s previous meeting, although the district has not yet received the cash because of timing delays. Anderson said district finance and grant staff took steps to mitigate the planning impact while awaiting disbursement.
Anderson reported the district has about 58 new teachers participating in RISE, the district’s induction for teachers new to Elko County School District. He outlined convocation events on Tuesday, Aug. 12: an 8 a.m. session (Elko and Spring Creek schools) that runs to 9:15 a.m.; a 9:30 a.m. session with a student assembly; and a 10:30 a.m. session from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. for rural and other schools. Joe Beckman will present at the convocation sessions.
The superintendent credited state representatives, other school districts and advocacy organizations with helping secure the release of funds and thanked local partners who supported student services. Anderson said Elko Federal Credit Union agreed to fund Hope Squad subscriptions for secondary schools after prior state support lapsed. He also announced a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the district’s new Agriscience Building scheduled for Sept. 10 and said his understanding is the building will be fully functional for the first day of school, pending final classroom setup.
Anderson thanked central-office staff and administrators for summer work preparing for the start of the school year and invited trustees to attend convocation and the ribbon cutting. He offered to accompany trustees on school visits the first week of classes.
