LGBTQ+ task force reports rise in Municipal Equality Index, details events and partnerships

Cesar Villarreal, chair of the City of Brownsville’s LGBTQ+ Task Force, presented the group’s annual update to the City Commission on Aug. 5, outlining outreach, partnerships and planned events.
Villarreal said the task force’s work on municipal policy and community engagement contributed to a rise in Brownsville’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI). He reported the city’s MEI rose 29 points from 46 in 2023 to about 75 in 2024 and asked the commission for continued engagement with law-enforcement relations to support further gains.
The task force listed ongoing partnerships with local and regional organizations including South Texas Equality Project, Valley AIDS Council, Planned Parenthood, Roca, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid and others. The group described an active calendar of programs aimed at visibility and youth support: Trans Day of Visibility events, a pride exhibit, pride at the farmers market, a gender euphoria workshop, monthly “Chicas” social events, a pride flag-raising, a downtown pub crawl and youth-focused events such as a Color Splash camp adapted from Dallas.
Villarreal said the task force is finalizing bylaws and requested continued city support. Commissioners thanked the task force for its work; one commissioner and members of the public praised volunteers for community outreach and safety initiatives.
No commission action was taken during the presentation.
