Trustees report committee updates: NIAA sanctions lacrosse, school naming recommendations and Vegas PBS funding status

Trustee Cavazos reported that the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) board of control voted unanimously, 12–0, to sanction boys and girls lacrosse beginning in the 2026–27 school year; she said the NIAA will now work through scheduling, equipment and uniform logistics.
Trustee Henry, who chaired the school naming committee, told trustees the committee approved three recommendations that will be forwarded to the full Board for consideration at a future meeting: rename the healing center at St. Jude's to Amy Ayub Academy of Hope; rename Building Number 2 at the Dr. Beth Howe Center to the Yvette Wintermute Building; and rename the School for Academic Excellence at Charles I. West Hall Preparatory Institute to Dr. Charles I. West Preparatory Academy. Henry said these are committee recommendations that will appear on an upcoming agenda.
Trustee Dominguez reported on Vegas PBS operations and financing after recent federal funding reductions. Dominguez told trustees the cuts were roughly 12% of Vegas PBS's budget (she cited approximately $3.8 million) but said the station has reserves that can carry operations for more than a year; staff and trustees said they plan to pursue partnerships and donations to close the gap. Dominguez also reminded trustees that Vegas PBS provides emergency communications and operates a special‑needs library open to the public.
Trustee Stevens reported bond oversight committee news: the committee elected a new chair, Jenna Blackman Taylor, and is working on a report template and bylaw updates to align with district governance policies; the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition reorganized into a council of governments and moved CCSD off the committee, but CCSD will be invited back on education items.
