The director added that because more than two years remain on Noonan’s term, the appointee would have to run in the next general election for the remainder of the term.
Council members discussed process details, public notice and timing. One council member said the group would advertise the vacancy, request short resumes and require that candidates be residents and qualified electors of Maumee for at least two years, consistent with past practice circulated to council. Several members urged quicker action than the originally proposed Aug. 18 meeting; others said a brief advertising window would allow interested residents who are on vacation to apply.
Council also discussed how election logistics would be handled after an appointment. The law director said the board of elections would determine how the seat is placed on the ballot and whether any petition or filing requirements would apply; "that’s a BOE decision," the director said.
On a motion to add a special meeting prior to Aug. 18 for the purpose of making the appointment, the council voted to approve the meeting (tally: yes 6, no 0). The council did not set the final date at the vote; members said the exact meeting date would be set and circulated to all members.
