Vestavia Hills board adopts four-goal strategic plan, keeps concise mission phrase

The Vestavia Hills City Schools Board of Education on Aug. 1 approved a revised strategic plan that expands its prior goal structure from three to four goals and shortens the district mission to “strive to provide every student the opportunity to learn without limits,” the superintendent said.
Board members said the plan follows a multi-month review that included capacity, communication and SWOT audits and multiple stakeholder workshops. The board voted by voice to adopt the plan after a presentation from district staff and members of the district’s discovery team.
District officials said the new plan keeps the system’s mission while reorganizing goals into four areas: student experience; employee engagement; family and community partnerships; and stewardship and support. The superintendent described the revision as a “slight change in our goal structure” that resulted from discovery-team meetings in April, follow-up work in May and edits over the summer.
The district said the plan’s first goal, student experience, emphasizes excellence, curiosity and resilience and links academic achievement to personal growth. The second goal, employee engagement, is intended to focus on staff workplace culture and professional collaboration. The third goal centers on family and community partnerships, with an explicit emphasis on maintaining trust and a shared commitment. The fourth goal, stewardship and support, addresses financial stewardship and the effective use of community-provided resources.
The superintendent told the board the strategic-plan drafting process drew on a capacity audit, a SWOT analysis completed in January and a communication audit from the previous fall. He said a six-member discovery team met in late April to draft goal language, returned changes to the larger stakeholder group in May and continued edits through the summer.
Several board members praised the process. A board speaker said participants who were not staff “really appreciated being heard” and that the small-group discussions made stakeholders feel their input was noted. The board president (Doctor Raymond) also thanked staff for laying out the vision and measures the district hopes to obtain.
The district staff said the plan document includes an acknowledgment of discovery-team members and other participants from the school system and the community.
Board members said the district will follow with marketing material about the plan. No specific implementation timetable or budget changes were presented at the meeting.
