City updates plans for signal at 117th Avenue and Chambers; design estimated, construction appropriation to follow

Commerce City staff updated council on efforts to improve pedestrian safety at the intersection of A Hundred and Seventeenth (117th) Avenue and Chambers after residents raised concerns in public comment about a broken crosswalk signal.
City Manager Jason Rogers told council staff have conducted due diligence and begun design work for a traffic signal at the intersection. "There will also be considerations of additional pedestrian improvements, that may include a pedestrian refuge," Rogers said, noting the city is working from the national MUTCD and AASHTO guidance as it completes design.
Rogers said staff estimate materials and installation at the location will be about $850,000 in current market conditions and that, because a Heartland/Chambers design effort is proceeding concurrently, the combined construction appropriation request could be about $1,700,000. "At a future meeting, we will come back before this body for an appropriations ordinance in the amount of $1,700,000," he said.
Mayor Pro Tem Noble and several council members welcomed the update. No final appropriation was requested at the meeting; city staff said they expect to complete design work by October 2025 and will return with a formal appropriation ordinance after final design and cost confirmation.
