Appomattox State Forest brings in $260,058; county share $32,507, forestry manager reports

Shanna Lewis, forestry manager, told the Appomattox County Board of Supervisors the state forest had “a really good year” and produced $260,057.95 in receipts, which resulted in a $32,507.25 payment to the county.
Lewis described several management activities underway: two hardwood-improvement projects (one intended as a demonstration and educational site), a demonstration area along Walker Forest Road for tours and landowner visits, invasive-species treatments focused on tree-of-heaven, and 17 acres left to naturally regenerate in upland hardwoods with a substantial oak component. She said the county planted 79 acres this year but has already scheduled more than twice that acreage for the upcoming year.
Board members asked about spotted lanternfly and host plants during the presentation. Lewis said tree-of-heaven is one host and that other species such as red maple can also serve as hosts. On controlling invasive shrubs such as autumn olive (Russian olive), she said chemical treatment, basal bark application or cutting and stump-treating are labor-intensive but effective options.
The board thanked Lewis and accepted the update; she later presented the county with a check reflecting the payment.
No formal action or appropriation was requested for the forest receipts during the appearance; the report was presented as an informational update to the board.
