Library to replace decade‑old RFID system; announces staff development closure, updated children policy and memorial for longtime librarian

At the Carlsbad City Library Board of Trustees meeting on Aug. 27, Director Suzanne Smithson updated trustees on operational matters: a planned radio‑frequency identification (RFID) system replacement, upcoming closures including a staff development day, an updated unattended‑children policy and the recent death of a longtime librarian.
Smithson said the library first implemented RFID about 20 years ago and upgraded the hardware roughly 10 years ago; the current project will replace aging hardware and support self‑checkout and returns. The city selected three bidders for demonstrations; one could not meet the on‑site demonstration requirement and two vendors will conduct on‑site demonstrations in September. Smithson said the full replacement project is expected to take about 12 to 18 months from start to finish.
"This project will replace the 10‑year‑old hardware that we have now... The total length of it should be from beginning to end about 12 to 18 months," Suzanne Smithson said.
Smithson also noted two upcoming closures: the library will be closed Monday for Labor Day and will close on Sept. 18 for a staff development day, reopening at 3 p.m. that day. She said the city adopted a citywide code of conduct and the library’s unattended‑children policy was updated: children age 8 and younger must be accompanied by a guardian or chaperone while visiting the library.
The director closed her remarks by announcing the death of longtime librarian Lila Dooley, who worked at the Carlsbad City Library from 1987 to 2017. "We will miss her and we're saddened to hear of her recent passing," Smithson said.
Smithson also reported outreach activity: library staff hosted an outreach table at the nine TGIF concerts this summer and connected with about 1,700 attendees to share information about programs and services.
