The Lakeville Cemetery Commission on Aug. 15, 2018, approved returning eight cemetery plots to Lester G. Waddell Jr., directed staff to notify the town clerk and town accountant to process a $900 refund and void an existing deed, and discussed revised rules for cremation plots and other administrative business.
The commission met in the Local History Room of the Lakeville Public Library. Commissioners reviewed minutes from July and noted that the town's fiscal 2019 budget includes a $13,000 appropriation for the cemetery commission; commissioners requested a copy of the budget appropriation for their records. The minutes also record that the commission updated cemetery rules and regulations (originally revised in 2010) at its July 11, 2018 meeting to add provisions addressing cremains.
Under the amended interment rules discussed at the meeting, a full-size plot is recorded as 5 feet by 10 feet. The revised text lists a cremation grave as 18 inches long, 12 inches wide and 16 inches deep; an additional cremation grave in the same plot would use the same dimensions. Paragraph 6 of the interment rules was amended to allow a flat marker for cremations not to exceed 12 inches by 16 inches. Commissioners said they will add a new price list to the amended regulations.
Commissioners reported administrative and vendor matters. A motion was made and seconded to present a proposal to the town accountant recommending that any cemetery commissioner be permitted to dig a cremains grave or a foundation for compensation “like any other vendor;” the meeting record shows the motion was made and seconded but does not record a final vote on that proposal. Invoices for work on Yates and Ploppus plots were provided to the town accountant.
The commission also addressed a parcel return request from Lester G. Waddell Jr. Commission records presented at the meeting show that Waddell agreed to return ownership of seven plots while retaining one plot containing his father’s grave. The commission approved returning the plots, authorized a refund of deposits totaling $900, and asked the town clerk to void deed 103 for Lot 15 and to prepare a new deed for the single retained plot. The commission directed staff to send formal letters to the town clerk and town accountant documenting the action and the refund request.
Other business: the commission reported receiving a letter from Arthur Meak transferring four plots in Lot 16 of Precinct Cemetery to Robin Reynolds and said it is still awaiting an old estimate needed to proceed with fence repairs at Woods Cemetery. A phone call to Southeast Fence produced a quote of $1,750 for repairs at the front of the cemetery; commissioners requested quotes for the other three sides and asked Commissioner Fred Beal to follow up. Commissioners reviewed requests for reimbursements and invoices for foundations and related materials (amounts recorded in the minutes); several items were prepared to be submitted to accounting and require an absent commissioner’s signature before being forwarded.
The meeting adjourned at 10:47 a.m. The minutes state the next meeting will be Aug. 14, 2018, at 10 a.m. (as recorded in the commission’s minutes).
