Purple Ribbon Committee recommends storm hardening, new performing arts center; City Commission accepts report

The Sarasota City Commission on Aug. 18 unanimously accepted the final report of the ad hoc Van Weisel Purple Ribbon Committee, which recommended storm-resilience repairs to the Van Weisel Performing Arts Hall and acceleration of planning for a new performing arts center.

The committee, chaired by Charles Kossler, concluded after two years of study and public input that reuse of the hall for contemporary, first-run Broadway-level productions is constrained by its location, deferred maintenance and vulnerability to storm surge. The Purple Ribbon Committee “unanimously recommends that flood proofing and repairs outlined in the Karens 2021 and ’25 building assessment be made to sustain the Van Weisel and a new sustainable performing arts center project should be accelerated,” Kossler told the commission.
