Manor ISD teacher urges board to increase classroom printing funds

Michelle Ponish, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Decker Middle School, used the board’s public forum to describe classroom needs and ask for budget changes that would allow teachers to print maps, primary-source excerpts and differentiated reading passages.
Ponish said teachers were initially given $2 per month for printing at the start of the school year; she reported being told that the allotment was increased the morning of the meeting but said that, for many teachers, the sum still falls short of what they need for daily instruction. She described reliance on teacher-created materials because textbooks are “poorly organized and somewhat outdated,” and said physical paper-and-pencil activities remain essential for many students’ mastery of grade-level skills.
The board heard the comment during the public comment period; trustees did not take action on the request that evening but the superintendent earlier discussed budget pressures and the district’s compensation decisions in subsequent agenda items.
