Newport plans downtown remembrance and fundraiser as flood anniversary approaches

Carver said the event will be held the evening before the Long Term Recovery Group’s fairgrounds gathering — described in the meeting as Friday the 26th, with the Long Term Recovery Group event on Saturday the 27th — and will include promotions to draw people downtown, artisan booths, entertainment and a fundraising dinner tied to Newport Main Street’s application for the Tennessee Main Street program.
Carver told the council the Tennessee Main Street program provided a checklist of items the city needed to demonstrate before acceptance, including evidence of fundraising. The downtown event will be “multi-faceted,” Carver said, with brick-and-mortar businesses offering discounts, artisans gathered on McSween near the Tennessee Art Escape storefront, entertainment at the Tib Brown property and a dinner to raise funds for the Main Street group.
Carver cautioned that many details were still being finalized and that the city may be asked next month for specific authorizations to use public property. He said staff and volunteers (including Monica and other city employees) will assist with planning and that a comprehensive list of asks for the city will be presented to the council in the coming month.
