Sharon said the president of the General Assembly, "his excellency, Mister Philharmon Yang," commended France and Saudi Arabia for co‑chairing a high‑level conference on the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and said the conference must be "concrete and action oriented, identifying steps the international community must take to realize the two‑state solution." The spokesperson said the president described the conference as needed "more than ever."
Sharon also said the president will convene an informal General Assembly meeting at the end of the week for the U.N. secretary‑general to present reports on a mandate implementation review as part of the U.N.'s 80th session preparations; that meeting is scheduled for Aug. 1. The spokesperson said the president will travel to Turkmenistan to attend a U.N. conference of landlocked developing countries in August and that the U.N.'s provisional list of speakers for the general debate has been shared with media.
