Brandon Valley Chamber asks city for $85,000 to fund marketing and events

Jill Meyer, president of the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and publisher of the Brandon Valley Journal, asked the Brandon City Council to continue the city’s annual $85,000 contribution to the chamber to pay for “marketing and marketing related projects and events.”
Meyer told the council the chamber represents more than 280 local businesses and uses city funding for events and promotions she said drive sales-tax revenue and regional visitors. “We are proud of our strong partnership with the city,” Meyer said, and noted the chamber used city funds last year for events including a burger battle, a pizza battle, a beverage battle and other promotions.
Meyer also described recent advocacy work, saying the chamber ran a campaign opposing a ballot initiative she said could have cost the city as much as $565,000 in sales tax. “Understanding the potential fiscal impact of the initiative estimated to be as much as $565,000 in lost sales tax to our city, we launched an awareness campaign…,” she said.
A council member asked how many businesses belong to the chamber; Meyer replied that the chamber has “over 280 local businesses.” The council did not take a formal vote on the funding request during the meeting; Meyer closed by asking for the city’s continued support.
The chamber’s request will return to the council for any formal appropriation or budget action under the city’s normal finance process.
