Board approves minutes and consent agenda; several policies read for first time

At its regular meeting the Vancouver School District Board of Directors approved minutes from its Aug. 12 board workshop, the Aug. 12 regular meeting and the Aug. 26 committee meeting of the whole, and it approved the consent agenda. Board members cast roll‑call approvals for both procedural items; no votes opposed.
There was no substantive debate recorded on either item. The board then conducted first readings of several updated district policies recommended by WASDA and adjusted to reflect changes in state law, including policy updates tied to RCW chapters referenced in the meeting. Because these were first readings, the board took no action on the policy items at this meeting.
The policy revisions described by staff included updates to oath of office procedures, policy adoption language, homework/grading and progress reports (including language tied to parental notification), notification and dissemination of information about student offenses, updates to the nondiscrimination statement to add protected classes, and staff leave changes tied to recent state legislation. Board members asked clarifying questions about terms such as "immediately" in the student‑notification policy; staff said they would support administrators in applying the updated RCW language.
