City and library staff give construction and mural updates; renderings due at October meeting

City and library staff updated the Escondido Library Board of Trustees on construction progress for the library remodel and on an associated public-art mural project.
Robert, city staff, said the mural is likely to start in November or December and the goal is to have the mural installed prior to the redesigned library’s opening. “We are likely going to be starting that mural, sometime in November or December,” Robert said. He and Ed, project manager, showed trustees a color-selection “mood board” of carpet samples, paint and wood paneling choices and said staff are developing renderings; Robert said renderings will be available for trustees at the October meeting so the board can see how selections map to specific areas.
On construction, staff reported recent milestones and ongoing work: sewer inspections passed and have been covered; concrete placement for footings/foundations was scheduled for the following week; framing has been paused until concrete is set; tile roof work was reported about 80% complete with remaining work on alcove/window areas; roof-mounted HVAC units (RTUs) are being framed and structural modifications made to accept new units; ductwork cleaning was underway and staff described the system as effectively “almost brand new” once work concludes.
Staff also flagged a fire-protection issue: the building’s existing fire protection did not meet current code because of a missing fire hydrant in the immediate vicinity, and staff said they were coordinating with the water and fire departments to complete that work, likely within about two weeks.
Trustees asked about carpet choices and how different carpet patterns will define public areas (lounges, reading rooms) and about additional equipment for conference rooms. Staff said some carpet pieces are accent tiles and that larger carpet fields will be used to define spaces; renderings in October will clarify placement and finishes. Trustees also discussed coordination with Friends of the Library and donor recognition if donor funds — including a ceiling donation discussed in prior meetings — are used for fixtures or furnishings; staff said the city has a naming policy and would provide details.
The board was told the construction schedule remains on track and that staff will report renderings and any adjustments at the October meeting.
