City approves emergency boiler repair for aquatic center; YMCA offers temporary member access

The Columbus City Council on Aug. 18 approved an emergency purchase of $11,577.50 to replace a heat exchanger in a boiler at the city aquatic center.
Staff explained that after refilling the pool and starting heaters, one boiler failed to operate; an initial replacement part did not resolve the problem and staff determined the heat exchanger needed replacement. The quoted emergency purchase from Rhett's Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. is being reallocated from CIP 24‑17.
A staff member said pool temperatures are maintained "roughly 83 degrees," typically between 80 and 85.
Council members noted the repair delayed the aquatic center opening and that the YMCA has agreed to allow aquatic center members to swim free at the YMCA during the shutdown, provided members show their aquatic center membership.
The motion to approve the emergency quote was made and seconded and passed by voice vote.
