Council adopts two‑year extension for Deerfield Park Townhouse subdivision despite calls for shorter timeline

The Columbus City Council on Aug. 18 adopted a committee recommendation extending the deadline for completion of public improvements for Deerfield Park Townhouse Second subdivision from Sept. 18, 2025, to Sept. 18, 2027.
The extension was part of the Public Property, Safety and Works Committee report and was adopted by motion and voice vote.
During discussion, one council member said, "I think 2 years is too long. I think it should be a year, to keep them moving on their projects." A staff member responded that the Land Development Ordinance (LDO) does not prescribe a specific extension length and that the council sets the dates.
Other council members noted on‑the‑ground progress at the site and said they believed the developer (Ferguson Properties Inc.) has been diligent, with some townhomes complete and additional units underway. A council member said the council has been willing to be flexible with developers and suggested the council could revisit extension policies when specific projects return before it.
The motion to adopt the committee report passed by voice vote. No roll‑call tally was requested.
Council discussion and staff comments indicated the timing for remaining work is affected by utilities and paving; staff noted water, sanitary and storm work would need to be finished before significant progress on the second subdivision.
The adopted extension takes effect immediately and runs through Sept. 18, 2027.
