Northglenn council backs short AI-generated meeting recap pilot

The Northglenn City Council on Aug. 11 reviewed a pilot proposal from the city's communications director to produce brief, AI-aided recap videos summarizing council meetings.
Diana Wilson, the city's director of communications, said staff tested several formats and recommended a short, vertical video suitable for Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and other social platforms. "After looking at these different options, we decided to move forward with the version that we took the script off of YouTube, plugged that into AI, and said, hey. Give us a summary," Wilson told council.
Wilson said the in-house version can be produced quickly and would cost only modestly for subscriptions (the staff uses paid AI voice and summarization tools). She contrasted that option with a contractor-produced product that would cost several hundred to more than $1,000 per episode. The staff'recommended format includes on-screen text so the message remains accessible when viewers watch without sound.
Council members expressed support for the pilot and suggested distribution tactics. Council member Burns recommended LinkedIn and advised overlay captions because many users watch social video without sound. Council member Kondo suggested distributing the recap link by text to opt-in residents. Several council members said the short format could broaden access to meeting highlights for residents who cannot watch full meetings.
Why it matters: The city currently posts full meeting video to its YouTube channel. Council's tentative agreement to test short recaps aims to reach additional residents through social media and text outreach while maintaining staff review and fact-checking of AI-generated summaries.
Next steps: Staff will produce regular recaps after meetings, beginning with a sample slated for distribution the week after the next regular meeting, and return to council on Sept. 8 with a recommended production schedule and any contract or subscription costs requiring council action.
