Todd County authorizes posting for MIS specialist after commissioners question need for lead role

The Todd County Board of Commissioners authorized posting and hiring a MIS specialist (grade H) after staff described the role as requiring higher-level technical skills than the current MIS technician position.
An MIS presenter told the board the position was discussed at a July 1 work session and that Gallagher had evaluated the job description and returned a grade of H. Staff said the posting would be internal and would not increase overall staffing levels.
Commissioners asked whether a lead or supervisory title was necessary for a small department. The MIS presenter said the specialist role is intended to cover back-end projects that require a higher skill set than a technician. “It requires a certain skill set that's a little bit higher level than the MIS technician,” the presenter said. Commissioners also noted the department currently has three full‑time staff and one part‑time staff; staff confirmed that the specialist would be compensated at a higher grade than the technician.
After brief discussion the board moved, seconded and approved authorization to post and hire the MIS specialist. Staff said the position will be posted internally and brought back for hire recommendation once a candidate is selected.
Ending: Human Resources and MIS were directed to post the position internally and report back with candidates; the board recorded a vote in favor and the motion carried.
