Police leadership said 10 department vehicles were damaged in a June hailstorm; nine are being repaired and one older 2015 Durango was declared a total loss because repair costs exceeded its value. The police chief said the department solicited bids and recommended Superior Emergency Response Vehicles in Andover, Kansas, for the vehicle and outfitting; the vendor has previously installed lights, cages and other equipment for the department.
The chief told commissioners the department plans to retain the older Durango for city use rather than replacing it on the police fleet. He said the older vehicle has received regular maintenance and has about 75,000 miles; several exterior glass pieces were already replaced after the hailstorm.
A motion to approve the purchase was made and carried without recorded opposition. The commission approved the purchase and the department will proceed with ordering and outfitting the replacement vehicle.
