Wayne County to continue building and fire inspection support for Mount Olive under new agreement

Wayne County commissioners considered a motion to continue an interlocal agreement to provide building and fire inspection services to the Town of Mount Olive.
County staff told the board Mount Olive has been using the county—s inspection services and plans to hire a level‑1 inspector to assume routine residential inspections. Under the agreement presented, Mount Olive would handle level‑1 residential inspections and planning/zoning certification; Wayne County would continue to provide level‑2 and level‑3 building inspections (for larger and multi‑story structures) and certain annual fire inspections for regulated facilities including day care centers, nursing homes and foster homes. The town previously approved the arrangement at its town meeting, staff said.
The agreement includes an hourly reimbursement for county inspectors and travel time; staff said it mirrors similar agreements the county has with other municipalities. The county—s role would be limited to inspection services only; Mount Olive would be responsible for planning determinations and for certifying that structures are properly zoned before county inspectors perform inspections.
Staff noted the agreement is indefinite but contains a cancellation provision allowing either party to end services after a specified notice period if staffing or capacity changes. The board placed the item on the agenda for approval as part of routine interlocal services.
