Small subcommittee formed to shape school identity, interior graphics and memorial displays

The Middletown Building Committee agreed Aug. 13 to create a small subcommittee to develop the new middle‑high school’s project identity, interior graphics and plans for memorials and preserved memorabilia.
Architects said they had begun consulting the Middletown Historical Society to identify historical images and themes that could be incorporated as vinyl wall graphics, light‑well graphics and other interior treatments. The design team has added placeholder locations for wall graphics in the construction documents and recommended a small, focused subcommittee to finalize themes and artwork. The designer was available in early October for a kickoff meeting.
Committee members emphasized involving students and community members but recommended keeping the working group small so as not to slow the construction schedule. "I've offered to to kinda chair that and I've asked a couple of members already, Tammy and Tom, to serve on the subcommittee," one committee member said. The group agreed to begin with a small core and bring in additional stakeholders when needed.
Memorials and memorabilia: the architect noted items that could be reinstalled in the new building — athletic trophies, plaques, banners and the planetarium projector — and said the project can accommodate a wall of memorabilia or a time capsule if the committee wants to preserve those artifacts. Committee members agreed that formal space‑naming and dedications will follow established town regulations and likely require school committee and town council action; those naming decisions were treated as separate from the design team’s work to identify display locations and artwork.
Next steps: the subcommittee will convene to inventory items worth preserving, finalize interior graphic themes, and prepare signage artwork and recommendations. The design team will collect artwork and submit it to Gilbane as part of the signage package; the signage procurement schedule is targeted for late 2026. The subcommittee is expected to report recommendations back to the building committee before any formal naming or dedication decisions are made.
