'Printed and Stitched' opens at Cannon Gallery; 58 artists featured

Alison Benford, curator of exhibitions and arts venues coordinator for the City of Carlsbad, updated the Arts Commission Aug. 7 on a new exhibit at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery titled Printed and Stitched, which the gallery will have on display beginning Aug. 8 and for at least two weeks.
Benford told commissioners the show brings together 58 individual artists and emphasizes intersections between printmaking and fiber arts. She said the exhibit includes work from members of the California Society of Printmakers and the Studio Art Quilt Associates of California and Nevada, and spans emerging artists to established fiber-art practitioners.
Benford described recurring themes in the show — time, nature, family and cultural identity — and noted a number of techniques on view: block printing, cyanotype, linocut and woodcut, paper making, hand-dyeing, quilting, applique, hand embroidery and stitched assemblage. The exhibit also includes two handmade books with pages that will be changed weekly to offer new views over the run.
The gallery includes interactive components: a printmaker’s cabinet with tools visitors can touch, a stamping activity where visitors can stamp cards with white ink, and a case explaining printmaking processes. Benford said the gallery has seen strong visitor engagement in the first weeks, and she read several excerpts from the guest book praising the exhibit.
Commissioners asked whether artists would attend the opening; Benford said no confirmations had been received. Commissioner Michelle Bridal praised the exhibit and its appeal to children and families. The commission recorded no public speakers on the item.
An opening reception for the public is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m., with live music and refreshments. Benford invited commissioners and the public to visit the gallery and noted she will change pages in the handmade books weekly so repeat visits will show new material.
No formal action or vote was required of the commission on the exhibit update.
