Wells Select Board adopts higher tire disposal fees at transfer station

The Wells Select Board voted on Aug. 5 to adopt new disposal fees for tires at the Wells Transfer Station, following a recommendation from the town's Waste Management Advisory Committee.
Town staff member Steve Buckley told the board that the committee had recommended a fee increase at a May 3, 2022 meeting but that the change was never formally adopted. Buckley said the town's disposal costs have since increased and recommended the board adopt the committee's previously proposed schedule: small tires (up to 15 inches) $12; medium tires (over 15 inches) $30; heavy truck and tractor tires $50. "Implementing these updated fees will help meet the goal of operating a transfer station on a cost neutral basis," Buckley said.
Select Board members raised no substantive objections. A motion to adopt the fee schedule as proposed was made and approved; the public hearing on the proposed fee change was closed before the vote.
The board recorded the approval during its regular meeting and did not add additional modifications to the committee's proposed amounts. The vote was announced as in favor by the chair; the meeting minutes record the motion as approved by the board.
The fee change will be reflected in transfer station operations and billing; the board did not specify an effective date during the discussion.
