SUNY Orange seeks two-hour road closures for Oct. 18 Pumpkin Run; city development agency reports four housing projects in pipeline

Adrienne Victor, director for the Center for Student Involvement at SUNY Orange, asked the council for approval of road closures to host the SUNY Orange Pumpkin Run 5K and Kids Dash on Oct. 18, saying the event would use some college property and would need about two hours of road closures on South Street and surrounding streets.

"The event requires a few public road closures as our campus is not large enough in and of itself for a 5K," Victor said. "I would like to request the road closures listed on the course map for the morning of October 18 for about 2 hours."

Why it matters: The council later approved the event permit by resolution. Organizers will finalize details with the police department and DPW to limit community impact and manage traffic while the run is in progress.

Community Development Agency update Maria Bruney, representing the city’s economic development team, told the council that the Community Development Agency is beginning work at 7 Genung Street and has three other properties in the pipeline: 84 Linden Avenue (closed this year), 54 Washington (moving toward closing) and 168 Linden Avenue (under construction). "So we have 4 homes in the pipeline for this year," Bruney said.

Other community events Council members and the mayor also noted upcoming community events: National Night Out at Thrall Park (the mayor read a proclamation from Gov. Kathy Hochul) and the annual Run for Downtown weekend in mid-August, which last year drew nearly 800 walkers and runners.

Ending: Council approved the Pumpkin Run resolution and reminded organizers that final coordination on closures and traffic mitigation must be completed with city departments before the event.
