Commission approves $87,454 striping bid for 2025 HMA overlay; Tucker Road option discussed

The Seward County Board of County Commissioners approved a bid of $87,454.38 from Sillessen and Sons (bidder name as read in meeting) to stripe new blacktop from the county’s 2025 HMA overlay project and authorized payment from remaining bond funds on Aug. 4.
Mark Johnson of Road and Bridge told commissioners that the county solicited bids for striping and received one bid — from Sillessen and Sons — at $87,454.38. Johnson said he had contacted other firms for price comparisons and that the low bidder had recently performed work for the airport and neighboring communities. "We received 1 bid from Sillessen and Sons with the price of $87,454.38, and that is the only bid we received," Johnson said.
The commission approved the bid and directed that the striping work be paid from the remaining bond funds allocated to the overlay project. Commissioners also discussed an additional one‑mile striping of Tucker Road (from Western to Kansas Avenue) after staff identified complications in jurisdictional maintenance and existing striping on portions of the corridor. Johnson said adding that mile would increase the bid by roughly $3,000–$3,200; commissioners agreed to authorize consideration of that extra mile and to decide whether it should be paid from bond funds or the county’s Highway Fund (special highway 215), with normal maintenance more appropriately billed to the highway fund.
The road department indicated the striping work could be completed within 30 days of award. Commissioners approved the striping motion by show of hands.
