Committee forwards SRO agreement with Mount Vernon School District to full court

Chief Deputy Wooley told the committee he worked with Mount Vernon School District on a memorandum of understanding that mirrors the county's arrangement with Greenbrier School District. “The Mount Vernon School Board met. They approved the MOU and approved to pay the salary plus benefits for a full time deputy to serve at Mount Vernon School District,” Chief Deputy Wooley said. He added the compensation for this fiscal year would likely be prorated, with the full term beginning next year.
Committee discussion clarified the county's existing SRO footprint. Chief Deputy Wooley said Greenbrier funds two school resource officers at Spring Hill Elementary and Wooster Elementary; Mount Vernon will fund an SRO at one of its campuses (elementary or high school). The sheriff's office also provides additional SRO coverage in the county, and Wooley said the county expects to have four SRO positions in total across districts and arrangements when the Mount Vernon agreement is in place, though one of those is funded by the county and others by the individual school districts.
Committee member Willard asked whether other schools in the county had similar agreements; Wooley responded that Greenbrier and Mount Vernon have formal funding agreements and that Mayflower Police Department and Vilonia and Guy school arrangements differ because some communities maintain their own police departments.
After discussion, a committee member moved and a second was given to forward ordinance 25-23 to the full court. The committee approved the motion by voice; no opposition was recorded in the meeting transcript.
The ordinance would authorize the county to enter an MOU under which Mount Vernon School District pays the deputy's salary and benefits and the sheriff's office provides the officer. Final approval and any fiscal or implementation details will be decided by the full court.
