Board approves renaming portion of Green Level West Road to High House Road, compensation promised to affected residents

Wake County commissioners on Aug. 18 approved an ordinance to permanently rename a section of Green Level West Road (SR 1615) to High House Road, effective Jan. 30, 2026.
Diane Saunders of the county GIS team presented maps showing the section under county jurisdiction and noted that the Town of Cary had adopted a supporting resolution on June 12, 2025. Saunders said Cary conducted outreach, held a public information meeting and two public hearings; at the town hearing no one spoke in opposition and Cary adopted the renaming resolution unanimously.
The affected stretch includes six residences in the county’s jurisdiction and no business addresses. Cary planner and addressing coordinator Jessica Chaba told the board the town will reimburse affected property owners for address-change costs. “We will be sending a check per property, $300 each,” she said. County staff said they will coordinate with the U.S. Postal Service and the Board of Elections to help with updates; the Postal Service typically links old and new addresses and forwards mail but recognition of new addresses in all systems can take longer than a year.
Commissioner Adamson asked about the length of postal forwarding and system updates; Saunders and the Cary planner explained address‑validation systems and the Postal Service linking process. The county emphasized the renaming will take effect after the busy holiday and election seasons to reduce impact.
No members of the public signed up to speak at the county hearing and no online comments were recorded. Commissioners moved and seconded the ordinance and approved it by voice vote.
The county will replace one street sign associated with the renaming. Other sections of Green Level West Road that are city limits or ETJ matters were not part of this action.
