Chisholm Trail monument to move to Government Springs Park on Sept. 9; base poured and accessible paths improved

Corey updated the commission on the planned relocation of the Chisholm Trail Monument from its current site near Highway 81 and Carrier Road to a new location on the south side of Government Springs Park, adjacent to the Cherokee Strip Museum.
"We are going to be moving that monument to Government Springs Park," Corey said, adding that a new concrete base has already been poured and work is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 8 a.m. Staff said they have contracted professional haulers to move the monument and will document the operation with photos and video.
Corey and commissioners said the park location is historically appropriate because Government Springs was a watering hole for cattle drivers on the Chisholm Trail. Staff noted sidewalks in the area have been repaired and made ADA‑accessible in preparation for the monument, and that lighting is not currently planned but could be considered later.
No formal action was required; staff asked the mayor to help ensure the park gate is unlocked for the scheduled move and said they will coordinate logistics on the moving day.
