Diversity committee announces Hispanic Heritage Month events and panel

Kevin Lopez Cruz presented a report on behalf of the City of Bowie Diversity Committee on Sept. 15 outlining Hispanic Heritage Month observances and a community event scheduled for Sept. 23.
“Since 1968, the period from September 15 to October 15 has been federally recognized by presidential proclamation as Hispanic Heritage Month,” Lopez Cruz said, describing the month’s purpose to honor histories, cultures and contributions of people with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America and Spanish‑speaking Caribbean nations.
Lopez Cruz highlighted the month’s alignment with the independence anniversaries of several countries and noted national figures and local leaders who have advanced Latino visibility and engagement. He also invited residents to a Diversity Committee event on Sept. 23 featuring a panel of local Hispanic leaders and opportunities for community dialogue.
The presentation was informational; council took no action.
