University facility leaders told the Board of Regents' Property and Facilities Committee on Wednesday that aging buildings and rising deferred-maintenance backlogs are a central concern and presented capital requests for the coming biennium.
At the University of Iowa, Rod Leonard described an aging portfolio of roughly 260 buildings with a substantial deferred-maintenance backlog and asked for support for a variety of projects, including a $3.9 million renovation at the University Capital Center to relocate and modernize the emergency medical services (EMS) learning resource center. The committee recommended approval of the project by general consent; if approved the project would start construction in October with expected completion by March 2026 and be funded by UI Health Care earnings and equity.
