The Chico City Council on Sept. 16 authorized the creation of a seven‑member ad hoc committee to advance a downtown wayfinding signage plan and to coordinate with prior county‑funded design work.
City staff noted Explore Butte County and county ARPA funds previously produced wayfinding design guidance, including pedestrian signage and kiosk concepts developed to MUTCD standards for placement on streets and pedestrian corridors. Nicole Farley of Explore Butte County urged the city to use those existing, county‑funded designs and placements and offered to participate in the ad hoc.
Councilmembers discussed limited staff time, the value of county‑level consistency and the idea of beginning with a small implementation pilot. The ad hoc will gather public and stakeholder input, consult available design schematics, and bring a recommendation to council about scope and phased implementation. The vote to create a seven‑member ad hoc with limited staff support carried 6‑0 with one recusal (Councilmember Van Overbeck recused himself on a related downtown building project).
