The Charleston County Board of Education voted unanimously at a special call meeting to select four applicants for interviews in the search for the district’s next director of schools.
Board members chose Jennifer (surname not specified), Misty Swindle, Tracy Abraham and Benjamin Johnson for interviews and authorized Dr. Satterfield to arrange times with each candidate. The board set the interview window for the week of Sept. 8–12 and indicated it prefers 5 p.m. start times but will accommodate candidate requests to move times.
The action gives staff authority to contact candidates, confirm availability and propose specific interview times to the board. The board also instructed staff to notify applicants who were not selected for interviews. Members said they plan to discuss and rank candidates at an upcoming work session and, if they reach agreement, to negotiate terms and send any contract to the district’s lawyer, identified in the meeting as Deborah, for legal review.
During the meeting board members discussed logistics for the interview process, including whether to hold multiple interviews in one evening and how to give each board member an equitable opportunity to ask questions. The board agreed on a procedure in which a candidate will present, then each board member will ask questions in turn with an opportunity for follow-ups.
The motion to select the four applicants and to authorize Dr. Satterfield to set up interviews was made by Rachel and seconded by Deanna; members voted "aye" and the motion passed unanimously. The transcript does not list a roll-call tally.
After interviews and a work-session discussion, the board said it intends to rank candidates (first through fourth choices) so it can proceed to contract negotiations with its top choice; the board noted that if negotiations with ranked candidates fail it may restart the search.
Less-critical items from the meeting included scheduling preferences and board members’ personal availability; the board declined to send a letter to interviewed candidates inviting them to observe the ensuing public work-session discussion but instructed staff to notify non-interviewed applicants that their applications were not advanced.
The board adjourned after completing the selection and scheduling discussion.
