Baltimore County board adopts revised 2025-26 school calendar after mediation with teachers' union

The Board of Education on Aug. 12 approved a revised 2025-26 school calendar developed in collaboration with the teachers' union, TABCO, as part of a mediated agreement.
Under the change, the district will add Nov. 14, 2025 and Feb. 20, 2026 as three-hour early-release days for students to permit teacher professional development. The day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26, 2025) will be a half day for students and a half day described as mental-health or early-release for teachers.
Calendar staff explained the district could not make the Wednesday before Thanksgiving entirely a professional development day without extending the school year because Maryland law requires 180 school days. "Because state law requires that there be 180 school days, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving cannot be changed to a half day PD and a half day mental health without extending the school year," calendar staff said. In discussion the board and union representatives said TABCO membership did not want the alternative that would have extended the school year into June.
The board adopted the revised calendar on a roll call vote; the chair announced, "Motion carries." Board members asked staff to update public-facing materials so community members can see exactly what changed and why those dates were chosen.
