Council repeals airport committee ordinance and discontinues bicycle–pedestrian advisory committee.
On Aug. 21 the Marion City Council opened public hearings and approved actions to discontinue two advisory groups. The council approved initial consideration of Ordinance No. 25-25 to repeal Chapter 12, Article 7 of the Marion Code of Ordinances regarding the Marion Municipal Airport Committee and approved Resolution No. 32,515 discontinuing the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
Staff said the airport committee was originally tied to oversight of a lease agreement and is no longer required following the sale of the runway. "This is, simply a cleanup matter now that the runway has been sold. The requirements of the Marion Municipal Airport Committee is no longer, required," a staff member told the council.
Planning staff said the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee had met and voted unanimously to disband; they reported the group's original purpose had largely been fulfilled and ongoing needs are being met by staff and regular city operations. Staff also said the bicycle committee had never been formally created by ordinance under Iowa Code and therefore discontinuance would be handled by resolution rather than ordinance. Staff added the committee suggested any future work would be better handled by a volunteer or "friends" group rather than a formal committee.
Both measures were approved by the council during the meeting. The ordinance received initial consideration and the resolution discontinuing the bicycle committee passed by voice vote.
