Commission defers PUD request for mixed-use overlay at 10302C1 to Sept. 16 after airport safety concerns

The Planning Commission on Aug. 19 voted unanimously to defer a request for a planned unit development overlay for property designated 10302C1 to the Sept. 16 meeting so the applicant can address staff comments and potential aviation-safety questions raised during public comment.
Staff said the applicant asked for a deferral to address staff comments and that this was the first request for deferral; no costs apply for a first deferral. During public comment, pilot and resident Mark Stasney said he was concerned about the proposed building height and potential impacts to navigation and safety at Scholes Airport, including risks during construction (for example, cranes). Stasney asked the commission to request an FAA review or opinion about effects on runway flight paths.
A commissioner later asserted that the project had already received FAA approval, noting prior dealings with the agency in their prior professional experience; another commissioner cautioned against responding to public comment until the comment period concluded. After closing public comments, the commission voted to defer the PUD request to Sept. 16 to allow the applicant to address staff comments and any additional information including, if necessary, materials related to aviation safety.
Staff will bring the item back at the Sept. 16 meeting for a workshop or public hearing as appropriate.
