Assemblymember Dunn said the resolution mirrors whereas clauses from a previously proposed ordinance and does not de-obligate or reallocate borough funds; it asks only that the school board use its authority to locate operating funding for the pools.
Assemblymember Johnson said he supported the approach as respectful of the school board's authority while responding to constituent concerns. "It respects the school board's authority, and yet, I certainly have constituents who want to do this," Johnson said.
Dunn said the resolution grew out of opposition at an earlier meeting to an ordinance that would have de-obligated borough funds and concerns about a potential veto. The current resolution is intended to urge the board to re-examine operating budgets and consider funding to keep the two pools open.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the resolution during the meeting; the chair said the item would be added to the full agenda but not to the consent agenda unless a member requested that placement.
Next steps: the resolution will be placed on the assembly agenda for later consideration and the borough will continue to receive public input on the pools' future.
