Del Valle ISD board adopts five‑year student outcome goals, sets targets for math, reading and CCMR

The Del Valle ISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 19 adopted a set of five‑year student outcome goals intended to raise academic performance districtwide, with targets covering third‑grade math and reading, seventh‑grade math, and college, career and military readiness (CCMR).
The goals were presented by Dr. Mark Cantu, who told trustees the targets align with state expectations and the board’s strategic direction. For example, staff proposed raising third‑grade math from about 27 percent meeting standards to 60 percent in five years and moving third‑grade reading from about 32 percent to 60 percent. Staff said final assessment data were still being reconciled and that published goal numbers would be clarified once final state figures were available.
"We're going to have really laser‑focused conversations here," Superintendent Dr. Gutierrez said in support of the work, adding that the board’s engagement and monitoring of data will change district culture and help campuses translate goals into classroom actions. Dr. Cantu said the district will set annual interim targets and share them with administrators and teachers.
Trustees discussed performance differences between students on grade level and those in advanced course placements: staff noted that students taking advanced math performed at higher meets/mastery rates (an example figure cited was roughly 72 percent passing in advanced sections). Trustees said they plan regular monitoring and asked staff to provide clearer annual targets and measures used for progress reporting.
Trustee Franco and others thanked participants from a recent town hall and staff who worked on the goals; trustees acknowledged the district will publish the final numbers once all state data are confirmed. The motion to adopt the goals passed unanimously, 9–0.
The board directed staff to set interim annual targets, publish the finalized goals with clarified baseline numbers, and return regular progress updates to the board.
