Minot canvassing board certifies mayoral result; Mark Janser sworn in, Mike Blessum elected council president

The Minot canvassing board certified the results of the Aug. 5 mayoral election on Aug. 18, declaring Mark Janser elected mayor. The canvass report, presented to the City Council, recorded 2,352 of 5,521 votes cast for Janser.
After the certification, Janser took the oath of office and offered brief remarks thanking voters, campaign supporters and his wife, Mary, and saying he looked forward to working with council members and city staff.
The certification followed a canvassing-board meeting earlier that day attended by Alderman Mike Blessum, City Attorney Stephanie Stahlheim, City Finance Director David Lakefield and Alderman Olsen; the board also thanked Ward County Auditor Marissa Hammond and her staff for their work. Alderman Olsen moved to accept the canvass report; the motion passed unanimously.
Shortly after the swearing-in, the council voted to elect a city council president. Alderman Mike Blessum was nominated and elected in a 5–1 roll-call outcome; the meeting record notes a single dissent by Mayor Janser. Blessum accepted the office and the council proceeded with the evening’s agenda.
The certification, the oath, and the council-president election were conducted at the start of the Aug. 18 regular meeting and recorded in the official minutes.
