Council approves participating in Purdue/Sackler opioid settlement

Lake Jackson The City Council on Aug. 18 authorized the city to participate in a proposed opioid settlement the state has negotiated with Purdue and members of the Sackler family and directed the city manager to sign related documents.
Council members said the state is handling settlement negotiations at scale and that the city previously agreed to participate in state-level opioid settlements. City officials said any eventual distribution to the city would be used to reimburse or offset local costs such as training, EMS supplies and law enforcement expenses associated with opioid response. The council approved participation by voice vote.
The city reported it received a prior settlement payment (an earlier, smaller distribution) and that any future payments would be distributed under the state's allocation methodology. Staff said the city has no new details on the timing or amount of any distribution at this time; the council's vote was an administrative action to accept the state's proposed settlement framework and participate.
