Patrick County honors long-serving board clerk; Beta Club named national district of distinction

The Patrick County School Board on Aug. 14 honored Sarah Lee Dickerson Collins and celebrated the district’s Beta Club after National Beta named Patrick County one of 78 National Beta Districts of Distinction.

The board dedicated a conference room and boardroom to Sarah Lee Dickerson Collins, recognizing "a lifetime of excellence" and "a true spirit of service," the board said. Board members noted Collins’s long service as board clerk and presented a certificate that will hang in the boardroom.

The board and staff also presented plaques and recognized students and sponsors after the district received the National Beta District of Distinction award. Jonathan Turchek, the Patrick County High School Beta coordinator, was singled out by the board for his role in organizing district participation in Beta programs. "If it were not for Mr. Turchek, our district would never even have the opportunity to receive the district of distinction," a board speaker said.

Student leaders who spoke at the meeting described the opportunities Beta provides. Cali Wood, introduced as a student and state-level Beta officer, told the board the program promotes leadership, service and academic achievement and thanked the board for extra transportation funding that made state and national events more accessible. "Let us lead by serving others," Wood said, echoing the Beta motto.

The board invited many club sponsors, chaperones and students to be photographed and acknowledged the elementary schools’ role in preparing younger students for Beta competitions, including robotics and other team events.

Superintendent remarks during the report also highlighted recent back-to-school activity and a remote donation connection: a former student who helped secure and donate Chromebooks that were sent abroad this summer. The superintendent said the district had provided 100 Chromebooks for overseas use through a former student’s effort and that the donation has been placed into two schools serving about 8,100 students; the superintendent said staff in those schools can check the devices out for classroom use.

The recognitions and presentations were part of the meeting’s opening ceremonies and the superintendent’s report; there were no formal votes tied to the recognitions beyond the board’s routine motions to approve the agenda and consent items earlier in the meeting.
