At the public‑comment portion of Austin ISD’s Aug. 14 special meeting, parents and community members raised concerns about the district’s consolidation rubric, questioned campus capacity figures and asked about the status of Lone Star governance under the Texas Education Agency.
Maplewood parent Adam Sparks said documents he had reviewed list Maplewood Elementary’s permanent capacity as 355 rather than 324 and asked the board to clarify which figure is official. Robert Kibbe, who identified himself as an East Side parent and community member, appealed for trustees to avoid closures that would require East Side students to take long bus rides; he said closures have disproportionately affected East Side campuses in past rounds. Sharon Vane (speaker used that name on the record) asked the board how long Lone Star governance imposed by the TEA will remain in place and requested a more detailed public accounting of requirements met under the TEA agreement.
Recorded callers echoed operational concerns: Carol Frederick asked that Good Friday be returned to the 2025–26 school calendar; Nelita Lugo thanked staff for expanded meal programs and other operational changes and asked the board to consider lengthening public testimony; and several parents praised the district’s consolidation rubric as a useful tool but also asked that staff share clarifications and opportunities for input.
Board members said they would follow up on specific factual questions. Trustee K. Singh asked administration to respond to Mr. Sparks’ email about Maplewood capacity; staff said they had already initiated an email response. Trustees also reminded callers that while board members may clarify points, Texas law limits trustees to requests for clarification rather than extended comment during a public meeting.
